Overview

PTFE gaskets — sometimes called Teflon gaskets after the well-known Chemours trade name — are not rubber, but they are a critical part of the flat gasket family for aggressive chemical and high-temperature service. Virgin PTFE offers near-universal chemical resistance across pH 0–14, operates from −200°C to +260°C, and is naturally non-stick and low-friction. The material does not elastically recover, so PTFE gaskets require higher compression — typically 20–25% of thickness — and well-machined flanges to seal reliably. Virgin PTFE is soft and cold-flows under bolt load, which can cause loss of preload over time. For improved creep resistance, filled PTFE grades use glass, carbon, graphite or bronze fillers. PTFE envelope gaskets combine a thin PTFE shell with a soft elastomer or compressed-fiber insert: the PTFE faces provide chemical resistance while the insert provides conformability and recovery. PTFE gaskets are widely used in chemical processing, pharmaceutical reactors, semiconductor equipment, food processing and cryogenic systems. They are static-only and should not be used where significant flange movement or vibration is expected. Virgin PTFE Gaskets

Maximum chemical purity and corrosion resistance. White, soft, best for clean chemical and food service.

Best for: Pharmaceutical, food, high-purity chemical flanges

Filled PTFE Gaskets

Glass, carbon, graphite or bronze fillers reduce cold flow and improve wear resistance.

Best for: Higher bolt loads, cyclic pressure, abrasive media

PTFE Envelope Gaskets

PTFE skin wrapped around an elastomer or fiber core. Combines chemical resistance with conformability.

Is a PTFE gasket the same as a Teflon gasket?

Teflon is a Chemours brand name for PTFE. A Teflon gasket is a PTFE gasket; PTFE is the generic polymer name.

What is a PTFE envelope gasket?

A PTFE envelope gasket has a thin PTFE shell wrapped around a soft core material such as EPDM or compressed fiber. The PTFE faces resist chemicals while the core provides conformability and recovery.

Can virgin PTFE gaskets handle high bolt loads?

Virgin PTFE cold-flows under high bolt loads, so torque must be controlled and retightening may be needed. For higher loads, use filled PTFE or PTFE envelope gaskets.

Are PTFE gaskets reusable?

No. PTFE gaskets deform permanently under compression and should be replaced at every disassembly.

When should I choose PTFE over rubber gasket?

Choose PTFE when the media attacks all elastomers, when temperature exceeds +200°C, or when ultra-high purity is required. Use rubber gaskets when elastic recovery, conformability or lower cost is more important.
