Overview

Pneumatic seals are engineered elastomer and composite components that contain compressed air in pneumatic cylinders, valves and actuators while minimizing friction and wear. Although pneumatic systems operate at lower pressures than hydraulics—typically 2 to 10 bar—they place unique demands on seals. Low breakout friction, rapid response, long life at high cycle rates and reliable performance with minimal lubrication are all critical. Common pneumatic seals include piston seals, rod seals, wipers/dust seals, cushion seals and buffer pads. Pneumatic piston seals are installed in the piston groove and seal against the cylinder bore. Profiles such as COP, Z5, Z8, ZT, PZ, PPD and E4 are widely used in ISO 15552, ISO 6432 and manufacturer-specific cylinders. These profiles are designed for low friction and stable dynamic performance across the pressure range of typical plant air systems. Rod seals such as Y-QYD and QYD seal the extending and retracting rod in the cylinder head, while wipers such as MYA, ZHM and EM exclude dust and moisture from the rod surface. Cushion seals and buffer pads control deceleration at the end of stroke, reducing impact noise and wear on the cylinder end caps. These are important in high-speed automation where uncontrolled piston impact would damage the actuator and surrounding equipment. Buffer caps and flat gaskets seal valve bodies, solenoid valves and end covers in compact pneumatic systems. Materials include NBR for standard compressed air service, TPU for high-wear applications and FKM for elevated temperatures or chemically contaminated air. How to choose a pneumatic seal: match the seal profile and material to the cylinder standard, bore diameter and operating environment. NBR is the default for clean, lubricated plant air. TPU is preferred for high-cycle or abrasive conditions. FKM handles elevated temperatures or chemically contaminated air. Always verify groove geometry matches the cylinder standard—pneumatic profiles are not interchangeable with hydraulic profiles even at the same nominal size.

Sizing

Pneumatic seals are sized by cylinder bore or rod diameter and the specific groove of the profile. Many profiles follow ISO 15552 or manufacturer-specific standards. Provide the cylinder model, bore, rod diameter and profile name, or send a drawing for cross-reference.

Can hydraulic seals be used in pneumatic cylinders?

Not generally. Hydraulic U-cups and piston seals often have too much friction for pneumatic service. Pneumatic-specific profiles are designed for lower pressure and faster cycling with minimal lubrication.

What causes a pneumatic cylinder to creep or stick?

Creep or stick-slip is usually caused by excessive seal friction, contaminated or undersized seals, worn rod/bore surfaces, or lack of lubrication. Low-friction pneumatic profiles and proper filtration solve most issues.
