Overview

Metal o rings are all-metal static seals used where elastomer O-rings cannot survive. A metal O-ring is a precision-formed ring — solid, hollow or C-shaped — that seals by elastic deflection when compressed between two flat mating surfaces. Because the seal element is metal, it withstands temperatures from cryogenic to over +800°C, ultra-high vacuum, radiation and aggressive chemicals that destroy rubber and most plastics. Common materials include 316L stainless steel for general corrosive service, Inconel 718 for high temperature and oxidation resistance, and Monel for seawater and reducing acids. Optional silver, gold or PTFE plating improves sealing performance at lower bolt loads and reduces galling on stainless flanges. Metal o rings are not interchangeable with elastomer O-rings without a joint redesign. They require higher bolt preload, smoother surface finish and tighter groove control. They are the standard choice in aerospace propulsion, semiconductor vacuum chambers, nuclear systems, cryogenic transfer lines and high-temperature exhaust assemblies where any polymer would fail.

Metal O-Ring Types

Solid Metal O-Rings

A solid metal ring compressed between flange faces. Highest pressure capacity and simplest form; limited elastic recovery.

Hollow Metal O-Rings

A metal tube formed into a ring and flattened at the seal interface. The hollow section provides spring-back and lower seating load than solid rings.

A C-shaped metal seal that opens under compression, providing high spring-back and excellent pressure-energized sealing.
