What is Viton chemical resistance like?

FKM, commonly known as Viton, has excellent resistance to petroleum oils, fuels, aromatics, acids, and chlorinated solvents. It is not recommended for ketones, strong bases, hot steam, or certain amines.

How does NBR chemical resistance compare to FKM?

NBR resists standard mineral oils and fuels at a lower cost but fails in ketones, aromatics, ozone, and temperatures above 120°C. FKM outperforms NBR in chemicals, high temperatures, and aggressive fuels.

Can I rely on compatibility ratings without testing?

Ratings are a reliable starting point for 90% of applications. For critical systems, new fluid formulations, or extreme temperatures, always validate with ASTM D471 immersion testing using the actual fluid and elastomer batch.

What happens if I use an incompatible O-ring material?

Incompatible fluids cause swelling, plasticizer extraction, hardening, or surface cracking. The seal loses its ability to maintain gland fill and contact stress, resulting in leakage or catastrophic failure.

Is there a universally chemical-resistant O-ring material?

Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) offers the broadest chemical and temperature resistance but costs 10-50 times more than standard elastomers. PTFE is chemically inert but requires spring energization because it has no elastic memory.
