Hydraulic Seals — Piston, Rod & Wiper Seals
Piston, rod, wiper, guide and V-packing seals for mobile and industrial hydraulic cylinders
Overview
Hydraulic Seal Types
Hydraulic Rod Seals
U-cup and profiled seals for cylinder rods including UN, UHS, UPH, FA, J and step-seal designs. Retain pressure while minimizing friction and rod wear.
Best for: Hydraulic cylinder rods, rams, spools, jacks
Hydraulic Piston Seals
Seals for cylinder pistons including IDU, KDAS, Glyd rings, OK and SPGW. Handle bidirectional pressure across the cylinder bore.
Best for: Double-acting and single-acting hydraulic cylinders
Wiper & Dust Seals
Rod wipers and scrapers including DOP, ZHM, EM, MYA, GA and DKB profiles. Exclude contamination from the rod seal zone.
Best for: Mobile hydraulics, construction, mining, agriculture
V-Packing & Chevron Seals
Multi-piece V-shaped sets in NBR and fabric for high-pressure pumps, rams and plungers. Adjustable packing nut compensates for wear.
Best for: High-pressure dynamic service, abrasive media, plunger pumps
Guide Rings & Wear Bands
PTFE-bronze, phenolic fabric and POM guide rings that support side loads and prevent metal contact in the cylinder.
Best for: Long-stroke cylinders, side-loaded pistons, large-bore rams
YA Seals
Compact TPU U-cup seal for light to medium hydraulic rod and piston service. Low-profile design for space-constrained glands.
Best for: Compact hydraulic cylinders, light-duty rams, tight gland envelopes
V-Type Backup Rings
NBR V-shaped support rings used alongside primary seals to reduce extrusion and improve gland stability. Not the same as V-packing — these are single support rings, not multi-piece chevron sets.
Best for: Supporting U-cups and O-rings in high-pressure or large-clearance glands
Materials
| Material | Properties | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| TPU (Polyurethane) | -35°C to +80°C; outstanding abrasion and extrusion resistance; high tensile strength | High-pressure hydraulics, reciprocating rods and pistons |
| NBR + Fabric | -30°C to +100°C; fabric reinforcement resists extrusion and abrasion in heavy-duty service | V-packings, high-pressure rams, rough surface conditions |
| POM + TPU + NBR Composite | Composite construction combining rigid POM anti-extrusion rings with resilient TPU/NBR sealing elements | KDAS and combination piston seals for medium to high pressure |
| PTFE + Bronze | -200°C to +260°C; extremely low friction; high extrusion resistance; compatible with virtually all fluids | Step seals, Glyd rings, low-friction and high-pressure service |
Sizing
Hydraulic seals are sized by the rod or bore diameter, groove diameter and groove width. Each profile has specific groove dimensions. Provide the cylinder bore, rod diameter, stroke, pressure, temperature and fluid, or send a drawing, and we will recommend the correct seal set and groove dimensions.
Metric Hydraulic Profiles
- • Rod seals: 6–400 mm rod diameter
- • Piston seals: 16–500 mm bore diameter
- • Standard cross-sections per profile
Custom Hydraulic Seals
- • Manufactured from drawing or sample
- • Any rod or bore diameter
- • Profile and material matched to application
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a rod seal and a piston seal?
A rod seal is installed in the cylinder head and seals around the moving rod. A piston seal is installed in the piston and seals against the cylinder bore. Rod seals manage fluid retention on the rod side; piston seals manage pressure across the piston in double-acting cylinders.
When should I use a wiper seal?
Use a wiper on every hydraulic cylinder that operates in a dirty, wet or abrasive environment. The wiper scrapes contamination off the rod before it enters the gland, protecting the rod seal and preventing scoring of the rod and bore.
What is a KDAS seal?
KDAS is a composite piston seal consisting of an NBR (or FKM) sealing element, POM guide/anti-extrusion rings and TPU/TPE support rings. It provides reliable bidirectional sealing with low friction and high pressure capability in a single groove.
Can I order a complete seal kit for a hydraulic cylinder?
Yes. We supply complete cylinder seal kits including rod seal, piston seal, wipers and guide rings matched to the bore and rod diameters. Send the cylinder model or a drawing for a kit quotation.
What material is best for high-pressure hydraulic seals?
TPU is the default for high-pressure reciprocating service due to its wear and extrusion resistance. PTFE-bronze is preferred for very high pressure, low friction or chemically aggressive fluids. NBR fabric is used for heavy-duty V-packings and abrasive conditions.
Do you supply seals for specific cylinder brands?
Yes. We can cross-reference seals for common hydraulic cylinder brands and supply direct replacements. Provide the cylinder model, bore, rod diameter and seal part numbers if available.
Can't find your seal profile in this list?
We manufacture many additional profiles including Y-type, Z-type, EC, YA, V-type backup rings, integral pistons (DK/DE/DP), buffer caps, cushion rings and solenoid valve gaskets. Send us a drawing or sample for a quotation — MOQ from 1 piece.
