Oxidizing acids (nitric, concentrated sulfuric) attack the polymer backbone chemically rather than merely swelling it, which is why PTFE and FFKM dominate this category. Temperature accelerates acid attack sharply — a rating earned at room temperature may not hold at +60°C.
