V-Packing Seals & Chevron Packing Sets
Adjustable chevron packing sets for high-pressure rams, plungers and reciprocating pumps
Overview
V-Packing Types
Homogeneous NBR V-Packing
All-rubber V-rings in NBR for general oil and hydraulic service. Flexible and economical for moderate pressure and clean conditions.
Best for: General hydraulics, presses, pumps, moderate pressure
Fabric-Reinforced V-Packing
NBR or FKM V-rings reinforced with fabric for high pressure, abrasion resistance and dimensional stability.
Best for: High-pressure rams, abrasive media, heavy-duty industrial
FKM V-Packing Sets
High-temperature and chemical-resistant V-packing for synthetic fluids, fuels and heat service.
Best for: High-temperature hydraulics, chemical pumps, synthetic oil systems
Custom Chevron Sets
Manufactured to drawing with custom ring count, adapter profiles, materials and dimensions.
Best for: OEM replacement, large rams, special plunger geometries
Materials
| Material | Properties | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| NBR | -40°C to +120°C; good oil resistance; flexible; economical | General hydraulic oil service, water-glycol |
| NBR + Fabric | Reinforced with cotton or synthetic fabric for extrusion resistance and abrasion protection | High-pressure rams, rough plungers, abrasive conditions |
| FKM | -20°C to +200°C; resistant to heat, synthetic fluids and aggressive chemicals | High-temperature and chemical service |
| FKM + Fabric | High-temperature fabric-reinforced construction for severe chemical and thermal service | Chemical pumps, hot oil systems, extreme duty |
Sizing
V-packing sets are sized by the rod or plunger diameter and the gland bore. The set height depends on the number of V-rings and the adapter thickness. Provide rod diameter, gland bore, stroke length, pressure and media for a set recommendation.
Standard V-Packing Sets
- • Rod/plunger diameters: 10–1000+ mm
- • NBR and fabric-reinforced standard
- • Adjustable packing nut design
Custom V-Packings
- • Manufactured from drawing or sample
- • Custom ring count and materials
- • MOQ from 1 set
Frequently Asked Questions
How does V-packing adjust for wear?
As the V-rings wear, the gland nut can be tightened to compress the set further. This pushes the V-rings radially outward against the rod and inward against the bore, restoring sealing force without replacing the packing.
Which way does V-packing face?
The open side of the V faces the pressure. System pressure enters the V and forces the lips against the rod and bore, improving the seal as pressure increases. For bidirectional pressure, a symmetrical or dual set arrangement is used.
What is the pressure limit for V-packing?
Pressure capability depends on material, ring count, clearance and surface finish. Fabric-reinforced V-packings in properly designed glands can handle hundreds of bar. We size each set based on the specific application parameters.
Can V-packing be used for rotary motion?
V-packing is designed for reciprocating or slow oscillating motion. It is not suitable for continuous rotary shaft sealing; use oil seals or rotary shaft seals for that application.
How many V-rings should be in a set?
The number of V-rings increases with pressure and plunger diameter. Light-duty sets may use one or two rings; heavy-duty high-pressure sets may use five or more. We calculate the correct ring count and adapter geometry from your application data.
Do you supply complete V-packing glands?
We supply the V-packing set including male and female adapters. We can also provide groove design guidance and gland dimension recommendations for new equipment or retrofit applications.
