Hydraulic Rod Seals
U-cup and profiled seals for hydraulic cylinder rods, rams and spools
Overview
Rod Seal Types
UN U-Cup Rod Seals
Standard metric U-cup with asymmetric lips for single-acting or double-acting rod sealing. Available in TPU, NBR and FKM.
Best for: General hydraulic cylinders, industrial and mobile equipment
UHS / UPH Rod Seals
High-performance U-cup profiles with optimized lip geometry for higher pressure and reduced friction compared to standard UN seals.
Best for: Medium to high-pressure cylinders, presses, injection molding
Step Seals & Glyd Rings
PTFE-bronze sealing ring with elastomer energizer for very low friction and high-pressure rod sealing.
Best for: Servo cylinders, precision presses, high-speed reciprocation
FA / J Profile Rod Seals
Specialized U-cup and lip profiles for specific OEM cylinder designs and replacement markets.
Best for: OEM replacement, custom cylinder designs
Materials
| Material | Properties | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| TPU (Polyurethane) | -35°C to +80°C; excellent wear and extrusion resistance; high resilience | High-pressure hydraulic rods, mobile equipment, abrasives |
| NBR | -40°C to +120°C; good mineral oil resistance; economical; moderate wear resistance | Low to medium pressure, standard industrial hydraulics |
| FKM | -20°C to +200°C; resistant to heat, synthetic fluids and chemicals | High-temperature hydraulics, synthetic oil systems |
| PTFE + Bronze | -200°C to +260°C; lowest friction; high pressure capability; universal fluid compatibility | Servo cylinders, low-friction requirements, extreme pressure |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between UN and UHS rod seals?
UN is the standard metric U-cup for general hydraulic rod sealing. UHS has optimized lip geometry for higher pressure, lower friction and better sealing stability. Both fit similar groove envelopes but UHS is preferred for demanding applications.
Why is my hydraulic cylinder leaking past the rod seal?
Common causes include worn or hardened seal material, damaged or scored rod surface, incorrect seal profile for the pressure, excessive clearance causing extrusion, or contamination embedded in the seal lip. A wiper seal and proper rod surface finish prevent many of these failures.
Can a rod seal be used for piston sealing?
Some U-cup profiles are symmetrical and can seal both rods and pistons, but most rod seals are optimized for rod geometry. IDU and KDAS are designed for piston bores, while ODU is a rod-type U-cup. Use the profile designed for the specific groove orientation.
What rod surface finish is best for rod seals?
A surface finish of Ra 0.2–0.4 µm is ideal for most rod seals. Hard chrome plating with a minimum thickness of 25 µm and hardness above 55 HRC provides long wear life. Avoid circumferential machining marks that can cause spiral leakage.
When should I choose a PTFE step seal over a U-cup?
Choose a PTFE step seal when friction must be minimized, when pressure exceeds typical U-cup limits, when stick-slip must be eliminated, or when the fluid attacks elastomers. Step seals are common in servo and precision hydraulic systems.
Do you supply rod seal kits?
Yes. We supply rod seal kits including the rod seal, wiper, backup ring and guide ring matched to your cylinder dimensions. Send the bore, rod diameter and application details for a kit quotation.
