Hydraulic Piston Seals
Bore seals for double-acting and single-acting hydraulic cylinders
Overview
Piston Seal Types
IDU U-Cup Piston Seals
Standard metric U-cup profile for piston bores. Asymmetric lips optimize sealing in one or both pressure directions. ODU is the rod-type counterpart used in rod glands.
Best for: General hydraulic cylinders, medium pressure
KDAS Combination Piston Seals
Composite seal with NBR (or FKM) sealing element, POM guide/anti-extrusion rings and TPU/TPE support rings in one groove. Low friction and bidirectional sealing.
Best for: Double-acting cylinders, medium to high pressure, compact grooves
Glyd Rings
PTFE-bronze sealing ring with O-ring energizer for extremely low friction and high-pressure bore sealing.
Best for: Servo cylinders, precision positioning, low stick-slip
OK / SPGW Composite Seals
Specialized composite piston seals used in mobile hydraulics, excavators and OEM cylinder designs.
Best for: Heavy-duty mobile equipment, OEM replacement
Custom Piston Seals
Manufactured from drawing or sample with custom OD, groove width, profile and material.
Best for: Legacy cylinders, special bore sizes, prototype development
Materials
| Material | Properties | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| TPU (Polyurethane) | -35°C to +80°C; high wear and extrusion resistance; resilient for dynamic sealing | High-pressure pistons, mobile hydraulics, abrasive conditions |
| NBR | -40°C to +120°C; good mineral oil compatibility; economical | Low to medium pressure industrial cylinders |
| POM + TPU + NBR Composite | Rigid anti-extrusion support combined with resilient sealing and energizing elements | KDAS-type combination seals for bidirectional pressure |
| PTFE + Bronze | -200°C to +260°C; ultra-low friction; high pressure capability; universal fluid compatibility | Glyd rings, servo cylinders, chemical and high-heat service |
Sizing
Piston seals are sized by the cylinder bore diameter, piston groove diameter and groove width. Each profile requires a specific groove geometry. Provide the bore diameter, pressure, fluid, temperature and piston design, or send a drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between IDU and ODU piston seals?
IDU is a bore-type U-cup seal used on pistons. ODU is a rod-type U-cup seal used on rods in some designs. Both are metric U-cup profiles but are installed in different groove orientations.
What is a KDAS piston seal made of?
KDAS is a composite seal typically made of an NBR (or FKM) sealing element, POM guide/anti-extrusion rings and TPU/TPE support rings. The assembly fits in a single piston groove and seals bidirectionally.
Can I use a Glyd ring in a standard O-ring groove?
No. Glyd rings require a specific rectangular groove geometry that is wider and shallower than a standard O-ring groove. Use the manufacturer's groove dimensions or contact us for a design review.
Why does my piston seal leak on one stroke direction only?
Unidirectional leakage usually indicates an asymmetric seal installed backwards, a damaged seal lip on one side, or pressure acting against a seal profile not designed for that direction. Check groove orientation and seal symmetry.
What is the advantage of a composite piston seal over a single U-cup?
Composite seals such as KDAS combine anti-extrusion support, low-friction sealing and energizing functions in one groove. They handle higher pressure, reduce leakage and simplify assembly compared to multi-component U-cup arrangements.
Do you supply piston seal installation guidance?
Yes. We provide groove drawings, installation recommendations and material selection guidance with every quotation. Send your cylinder drawing for a complete seal set recommendation.
